Postcard "Double Fall"

This fall postcard shows both hotels with Ken and Lucille Phillips in the foreground. Ken Phillips first worked at Minnewaska in 1927, Lucille came in 1934. They purchased the resort in 1955. The back is preprinted with an enticing description of the resort and an invitation to visit.

Postcard "Winter Sledding"

This 1971 winter postcard shows sledding up the hill later named Library Hill that was at the Library and Wine Cellar side of the Wildmere.  I’m sure it was faster going down, but you really had to make the turn or you’d end up in the lake!

Postcard "B&W Aerial"

This black and white winter aerial view was also a 1971 postcard.  The lake would freeze hard enough to hold people, horses, horse-drawn sleighs and yes a least one time a small airplane.

Postcard Horse Drawn Sleigh

Postcard "Horse Drawn Sleigh"

Yes, there were jingle bells and cold noses!  The sleigh rides tended to be shorter than the summer carriage rides since it really could get chilly sitting still on the sleigh while the horses pulled you around.  You can see the north end of the Wildmere on the right – it was added in 1910.

Postcard Awosting Falls

Postcard "Awosting Falls"

This 60 foot waterfall was named Awosting Falls since the Peters Kill runs as the overflow from Awosting Lake.  Here the Peters Kill drops 60 feet and then runs under 44/55 where there are two more waterfalls – Sheldon Falls and Peters Kill Falls.  It was the Peters Kill at Peters Kill Falls that ran the generators that produced electricity for the hotels.

Ski Minne had a Chair lift, T-bar, a J-Bar and a rope tow to get you back up the slopes.  The restaurant with its flying roof was designed by Kenneth Phillips as were the slopes themselves.

Reproduced Trail Map

This is a reproduction of the original Minnewaska Hiking Map as given to guests until the hotels closed at the end of the One Hundredth Season. These hiking maps are exact copies of the original with the added notation that they were re-printed in memory of Lucille Elston Phillips who wrote the introduction -- words as meaningful today as when first written. With this map, you can try to find some of the many trails that have been lost or abandoned since State acquisition.

The printed maps are replicas of the two original 8 x 2 foot hand painted maps with borders of pictures of various vistas and activities. One hung in the Wildmere Lobby and one in the Cliff House lobby.  On the left was the distance chart.

Every day guests would gather in the lobbies in front of the large map hanging on the wall to plan their route.  Group hikes met the leader at the map.  The smaller versions, like the one for sale here, were handed out at the desk. Hikers took a map with them so they wouldn’t get lost and would know the names of the places along the way.

If you have questions about a particular trail or place, email minnewaska@bellsouth.net and we will try to answer them.
